There are a lot of misconceptions about heroin addiction. For instance, someone being a heroin addict doesn’t mean they’re a die-hard druggie. In fact, many people who don't do other drugs are attracted to opiates. Most importantly, the reason people have such a difficult time getting off heroin is that they get sick. It’s called “dope sickness.” While most drugs are very unpleasant to quit, heroin (and other opiates) are one of the few classes of drug that cause physical withdrawal (along with alcohol and benzodiazepines). How bad is it heroin withdrawal? Depends on who you ask and how much/how long they used, but it’s been described as being like everything from a “bad flu” to “a brutal hell beyond any pain you’ll ever feel.” For many, the battle against heroin is life long.
