Even if you don't have kids, you probably have a pretty good idea of the fierce, unconditional, unstoppable instincts of a parent. That was the case for Sergeant Rafael Souza, an off-duty police officer, when he entered a pharmacy in Brazil with his infant son in his arms and his wife by his side. Suddenly, two armed robbers stormed the place. Maybe it was his instinct as a father. Maybe it was his training as a police officer. Maybe it was both. Souza sprang into action, and the security cameras captured the terrifying ordeal.
Try to imagine. You are a police officer in a dangerous city in Brazil. You've been trained to be aware of your surroundings. You're vigilant, perceptive and careful.
Day off. It's your day off. You're married, and you and your wife have a baby. You decide to do some errands together.
The pharmacy. Let's say that you needed to pick up some cold medication for your baby. So, you and your wife head to the local pharmacy. As a police officer, you almost always carry your handgun with you. You live in a dangerous city with a high rate of crime.
Then it happens. You walk up to the pharmacy counter with your wife, holding your baby. As you're waiting for your prescription, you hear some commotion from the front of the store.
Sergeant Raphael Souza. That is exactly what happened to Sergeant Raphael Souza. As he and his wife were waiting at the counter, two men wearing masks and hoods stormed the pharmacy, guns out. Souza's reaction was immediate.
Action. Souza instructed his wife to take shelter behind one of the stands so that the robbers could not see her. With one eye on his wife, one eye on the attackers and his baby in his arm, Souza pulled out his handgun. He shot one of the robbers point blank, and chased down the other one.
At the pharmacy counter. Here, you can see Souza holding his baby. The pharmacist is trying to take shelter. The robber, not seen in the image, has been shot.
Taking shelter. Souza's wife is hiding behind one of the aisles, terrified. Souza reportedly remained in total control of the situation. His infant was unharmed.
