A violent past. Manson had a violent past. He admitted to raping another inmate at a juvenile detention center while holding a knife to his throat. However, Manson never killed anyone. He is often mistakenly referred to as a serial killer.
Small but powerful. Charles Manson was 5'2", which is extremely short for a man. Despite his small stature, he was said to have a powerful presence. Reportedly, he had wild eyes that were both engaging and mesmerizing.
Mind control. Manson was a master of mind control. How did he get people to join his family? He used an array of tactics.
Wild sex. The Manson Family regularly had drug fueled orgies. There were some couples, yes, but few were monogamous and often swapped partners. Part of the draw of joining the family was the wild, uninhibited and hedonistic sex in the desert.
Drugs. The Manson Family had a seemingly endless supply of drugs. Reportedly, while his followers were tripping on acid, Manson was sober. His mind was clear, and he was in control.
Power, even from behind bars. Even while he was on trial, Manson was using his power to control his followers. He enjoyed the media circus. His female followers would sing, speak in Latin, and even shaved their heads at one point, all to create a freakshow and media spectacle.
No name Maddox. Charles Manson was born without a name. And he lived that way, a drifter with no real identity. He pretended to be a musician. He pretended to be a free-spirited hippie for awhile. He wound up wasting away in prison, a shadow of his former self. A man who did nothing but wreak havoc on the world. Helter Skelter; Charlie's gone.
